The Great Experiment

Day 1

Monday, July 3, 2000: Departed San Jose mid-morning, caught a connecting flight in Phoenix. Window seats both times, no one sitting beside me either flight even though I only ordered my tickets last Thursday. I think I burned a lot of positive karma on that one.

Arrived in Orlando at sunset.

I was the only person on the bus to the Hertz rental lot, so I had a great conversation with the bus driver, who was friendly and cheerful and had a vaguely German accent. I wanted to rent an Intrepid, but they didn't have any Intrepids. The clerk almost (really) had me sold on a Jaguar ($2000 for three weeks), but I decided I'd rather not risk learning Florida highways in a Jaguar, so I settled for a 2000 Toyota Camry.

The car

It came with a 'Hertz Neverlost' navigation system, which helped me get to within half a mile of my hotel with ease. Finding my hotel within the remaining half-mile radius took me until well past dark, and I had to stop and ask directions at a posh hotel with a duck on it.

Chinese takeout for dinner, a few moments to get my iBook all set up and online, a little work to create these web pages, and now I'm off to bed. Whups, it's past two in the morning...
