The Great Experiment

Day 15

Monday, July 17, 2000: A day to catch up on some much-needed sleep and some even-more-needed laundry.

A little weirdness this morning: the hotel's maid wanted to change the bedsheets and the towels in my room, but apparently the hotel rules say that the room's occupant is not allowed to be in the room while she cleans it. I didn't know this, and she didn't speak English, so she couldn't communicate it to me. All I could understand is that she really, really wanted to clean my room but she wouldn't actually come in and do it. A manager came by after a while and basically told me to get out of my room for about ten minutes while the maid worked... so, having nowhere else to go, I stood out in the hallway in my pajamas. Very weird.

I've been studying up on Celebration, and soaking in as much information as I can find about it -- bad as well as good. Now that I have a much better idea of what it's all about, tomorrow I'll return there to collect more details and ask more questions. (One of the most important: can I get DSL there?) I still have no idea where I'd want to get an apartment out here, whether in Celebration or elsewhere, before I start on my housebuilding plans, so I'll address that tomorrow too. My dreams have come a long way towards becoming real, but they still have a long way to go from here.

I haven't been able to get any knowledgeable first-hand opinions of Celebration yet. Everyone I've asked so far has said "It's bad because I've read somewhere that..." or "I heard that someone knew a guy who..." or "Disney is fascist and evil so their housing complex must be too!" I'm still looking for anyone who can give me specific examples of what's good or bad about the place. The only such person I've found so far has been the woman working in the gift shop there, and she seemed realistically positive about it. (As in, "People complain about Celebration because ... but I like it here.")

Some beanies I got from the Disney store at the Belz factory outlet a few days ago (I do have room for an Eeyore!)
