The Great Experiment

Day 18

Thursday, July 20, 2000: I was feeling exceptionally beat yesterday, so today I'm again catching up on sleep and these web pages. Additionally, I bought both books which have been written about Celebration, and I have a whole stack of reading material about the place, which I collected while I was there. Today's a day to study.

I have leads on apartments in Celebration; I just need to commit to them. My house plans won't proceed until after I've spent at least a few months here to make absolutely sure this is what I want to do.

I'm really leaning towards getting a Village house, in a Victorian style. There are still questions in my mind, such as the broadband Internet access question... but most importantly, do I really want to pay a premium to live in this perfect little town?

Evening update

Kristy called me this afternoon, and we hooked up for dinner at Jungle Jim's. Jungle Jim's is a restaurant with great hamburgers, fun decor, and every drink comes with a little el cheapo kitschy translucent plastic animal hanging from the end of the straw. I got a red mermaid; Kristy got a blue monkey.

Afterwards we went to Downtown Disney and checked out the huge Virgin Megastore there. It sells CD's, DVD's, computer software, and books. WHat more does anyone need?

We ventured into Pleasure Island, and she brought me first into the Comedy Warehouse club. In a small theater adorned with signage from Disney attractions of the past (including a Figment sign from Journey Into Imagination and a bunch of Kitchen Kabaret signs), five comedians carried on an hour-long improvisational session. They asked a lot of questions about an audience member then made up a song about him on the spot; they asked another audience member for an unusual saying then made one of the improv members have to guess what the saying was while everyone else carried on a skit around him, things like that. A lot of fun, but it had its rough spots; Kristy tells me that three of the comedians were fairly new there.

Next, we went to the Adventurers Club. This didn't live up to my expectations: it seemed to be just a glorified bar, with some Disney showmanship and Imagineering added to it. It was fun to see, but difficult to exit through the crowds of lingering visitors.

Not much more to report for tonight! I ventured out without my camera, so I apologize for the lack of photos. If you really want to see these places, come to Florida yourself!
